#worldspayday – is your cat neutered?

February 25, 2022

Today is #worldspayday and we wanted to share with you some recently published data to highlight the importance of having your cat neutered.

This recent independent report, commissioned by The Cat’s Protection League, supplies data on all things #cat.  The report holds all kinds of data on categories such as where people are getting cats from, how they are finding them, what kinds of cats people choose and whether they choose to buy or adopt a cat, to name just a few!

#didyouknow that in 2021, 26% of households in the UK owned a cat?  This is an increase of 3% on the numbers from 2020.  This equates to 600,000 more cats living in our homes with a total UK population now standing at 10.8 million!

The good news is a high percentage, 86%, of our cat population in the UK are #neutered.  There are 2% of owners who don’t know if their cat is neutered leaving 12%, or 1.3 million cats, which are not neutered.  This number significantly contributes to a rapidly growing cat population, 30% of which come from unplanned litters.  It’s worth keeping in mind that JUST ONE adult female cat is capable of having three litters a year, producing anywhere from 50 to 150 kittens in their breeding lifetime!

Birth control doesn’t exist for cats.  Neutering your cat is the only way to ensure unwanted litters are not a part of your cat ownership experience as well as not contributing to an already saturated cat population.  Neutering also removes the risk of pyometra in female cats, a serious and potentially deadly infection of the womb.

Cats can be neutered from 4 months old but our staff at Rowan understand that choosing to have your pet neutered can be a difficult decision.  We offer FREE consultations to allow cat owners to talk to a vet about the process and to answer any questions you might have.  It is also an opportunity for the vet to give your pet a full health check to make sure that they are ready to have the procedure.

To book your FREE pre-neuter consultation, contact the client care team via PetsApp or call 01772 639800 OR 01253 766352.
