Welcome Caitlin! RVN in waiting
The second newest member of the nursing team to join us in May is Caitlin. Caitlin is coming to the end of her RVN training and is due to qualify in the next few months.
Caitlin has worked in many veterinary practices as part of her training. She was offered a role here at Rowan in anticipation of her soon to be qualified status, bringing the total number of qualified Registered Veterinary nurses at Rowan to 6!
Caitlin has a particular interest in dog behaviour and has a 5 year old dog of her own.
We wish Caitlin the very best of luck with her studies and look forward to working with her in her new career as an RVN!

Welcome! Becca RVN
Becca took the degree route to becoming a veterinary nurse, which involved 3 years at University doing both theory and placement, the majority of which she completed at Rowan. She’s always wanted to work in the veterinary industry, choosing to become a veterinary nurse because she absolutely loves animals and knew how rewarding the job could be!
She’s had pets all of her life and couldn’t think of a better job. She currently has a very naughty Jack Russell and 2 cats who take up her spare time out of work. Becca received the news that she had qualified at the end of July so is now able to proudly wear her RVN “greens”!
We are so looking forward to watching her flourish into a fantastic nursing practitioner and wish her all the very best in her career. Well done Becca!
Our nursing team have a wealth of knowledge. The standards of care are set, maintained and driven by our head nurse Hayley. We are hoping to develop more nursing clinics in the future so our lovely patients can benefit from this expertise.
If you have any concerns about the health of your pet, call the client care team on 01772 639800 OR 01253 766352 or open a chat on PetsApp.

Client Care Team – Welcome Emily!
Our client care team has also seen some lovely new additions. Gone are the days where a receptionist sits at a desk filing her nails, answering a few phone calls. This role is #fullon and requires skills in communication, customer service, administration, products and services, technology not to mention good vet wrangling skills! These staff have a very tough task of learning everything very quickly with a #smile on their face. They’ve all taken on the challenge with gusto!
Our first new member of staff is Emily. Emily came to us back in November 2020. In previous roles, she has worked with children with special needs. She has two dogs and loves animals. Emily has really enjoyed making sure that when a pet visits Rowan, they feel loved and welcomed. She is really enjoying being hands on and is enjoying the challenge of a busy practice.
Our lovely client care team are always here to help where they can. If you have any questions about the health of your pet, call the team today on 01772 639800 OR 01253 766352 or open a chat on PetsApp.

Telephone technology
To help us manage our call load we have invested heavily in a more up-to-date telephone system. This new system allows us to handle and manage both incoming and outgoing calls more effectively. This upgrade is at both the Blackpool and Hillock Lane sites. The new system will allow us to adapt to the needs of the practice and our client’s needs in future.
We’re always open to feedback and ideas. There is still more exciting news of another new development on the horizon here at Rowan. It’s something we get asked about regularly by clients, so stay tuned for more information later in the month.
In the meantime, if you have any concerns about the health of your pet, call the team on 01772 639800 OR 01253 766352 or open a chat on PetsApp.

Do you have a stressed out cat?
Just like humans, cats can suffer from stress and anxiety.
Unlike dogs, they bond with their environment rather than their humans!
If you have a stressed cat, there are lots of things an owner can do to help. Some small changes to your cat’s environment can help your cat become less stressed and much happier. One of these ways is with the use of pheromones. Pheromones are natural messages animals use to communicate with the world around them.
What are these messages?
- Happy messages – when your cat is happy, they will mark their territory as familiar by rubbing their face against corners, furniture, people or other cats at home. By doing this, they release happy messages. These messages provide reassurance for your cat.
- Harmony messages – After a mother cat gives birth, she sends harmony messages to her kittens. These messages, released in the mammary zone, are naturally appeasing and ensure harmony between the kittens.
- Territory messages – cats are territorial by nature. They like to feel in control of their territory and have their own way of telling other cats “this is mine”! They scratch in visible places leaving marks and territory messages which come from their paws.
You can find out more HERE about the pheromone messages your cat spreads around your home, but how do you know if your cat is happy or not? Find out more HERE about the signs and behaviours of an unhappy cat.
What can I do to help?
Feliway have released a new pheromone product which replicates these hormone messages. The plug diffuser system simply plugs into a socket in your home in the place where your cat spends most of its time. For anxious or stressed cats, the release of these pheromones in your home will help to calm and reassure your cat.
Here’s a great short video explaining how to use and place the product.
There’s also a great introductory offer on the product here at Rowan. With every purchase of a Feliway Optimum Diffuser pack, receive a FREE refill worth £32.68!!!
If you’d like to take advantage of this offer, open a chat on PetsApp where you can order, pay and arrange to collect all in one go! Download the app by clicking the relevant link below:

There’s no progress without change!
There’s been a lot of change at Rowan Vets over the last 18 months. We have used COVID as an opportunity to look at how we can improve the way we do things. We #love our patients and want them to have the very best we can offer!
This month we are going to share all the changes that have already taken place as well as other exciting projects on the horizon which we hope our clients will love!
A change we made earlier in the year was the introduction of PetsApp. Most people expect to be able to communicate on a digital level. Our clients are no exception and being able to offer them the ability to contact us without calling on the telephone just seemed like a #nobrainer!
PetsApp is a great way to communicate with us quickly and discreetly using your mobile phone or tablet. You can order repeat medication, send pictures and videos, ask for advice and pay your bill by opening up a “chat”. Client feedback so far is positive and we have almost 1500 animals registered. If you’d like to download the app click on the link that applies to the practice you visit, below:

Another change is the introduction of a lovely new member of the vet team, Andreea. Andreea joined us just over 18 months ago and has had a pretty tough start to her veterinary career here at Rowan. She arrived just before the first national lockdown back in 2020 and has never worked at Rowan under normal circumstances. Thankfully, things seem to be moving in the right direction so having clients back in the consultation room is the first part of that transition for Andreea.

Pets and allergies to food
A food allergy is the result of the immune system overreacting to most often, a protein source within the food. There are sometimes reactions to a carbohydrate source too, but these are less common. Commercial diets or “off the shelf” diets like the ones you might buy in a pet shop or supermarket, are regularly contaminated with other protein sources as part of the manufacturing process.
The only way to find out if your pet has an allergy to food is through a food elimination trial. A diet trial needs to consist of a food that has a “novel protein” source or more simply, a source that your pet hasn’t been exposed to before.
There are several options available to owners to find the right kind of diet:
- Home cooked food – this is time consuming and sometimes less practical option and requires a real commitment from an owner.
- Hydrolised diet – a diet where the proteins are broken down so small, the body cannot detect their presence.
Whichever choice is made, your pet would need to stay on this diet for 6-8 weeks. Once your pet has been diagnosed with a food allergy the only treatment is a strict avoidance of the ingredient causing the allergy.
If you think your pet has an allergy and you’d like some advice, call the team today on 01772 639800 OR 01253 766352 or open a chat on PetsApp.

Did you know that pets can sunburn too?
Pets are as prone to burning in the sun just as we are. Both dogs and cats LOVE to snooze in the sun and pets that have a white or light coloured fur and skin are particularly susceptible to burning. It’s important that you protect them but human sunscreen is not safe for our pets. Human products commonly contain Zinc which is toxic to dogs. Owners need to look for a pets-afe sunscreen that doesn’t contain the toxic ingredient Zinc which will provide them with the protection they need.
To find out more about how to protect your pet in the sun, head over to the PDSA website HERE. There’s a great little video showing you how to apply sunscreen to your pet!
Sunburn is painful and if your pet is severely burned you should seek veterinary advice straight away.

Dogs die in hot cars
#dogsdieinhotcars is a campaign that is visited every year. It’s a campaign that is highlighted every year yet some people still leave their dogs in their car in boiling hot temperatures. It’s so important that owners understand the danger they are putting their pet in. Leaving their pet, even for a short time and with the windows open, can put the animal at risk. Take a look at this short campaign film HERE to highlight the dangers.
It’s not just hot cars that can cause an issue for your dog. By following some simple steps you can protect your pet from the effects of heat and hot weather. It can cause a very painful and potentially fatal situation.
Download our information leaflet HERE on how to deal with a pet suffering from heatstroke and don’t forget our small furry pets living outdoors in the garden. It’s really important that you ensure they are also considered. Download information HERE to see how you can take care of them during the hotter months.
For more information on how to keep your pets safe during the hotter months, visit the RSPCA site HERE
