Neutering – Callie’s Journey
December 9, 2021
Earlier in the month we posted about Callie’s neutering journey on our Facebook page. This is a “behind the scenes” look at what happens for our patients as well as trying to alleviate some of the anxiety and concerns owners have about the neutering procedure. We also want to take the opportunity to “blow our own trumpet” about the level of care offered here at Rowan!
Health Check
Part of Callie’s journey involves a weight and full health check. No matter how recently your pet has been seen, we will always check your pet’s weight on the day. This is so we can give the smallest amounts of anesthetic drugs so is imperative that it is calculated accurately. Weight monitoring is an important aspect of pet health care. Any significant change in weight could indicate a potential health issue and will inform how Laura, the vet will risk assess for the anaesthetic.
Laura undertakes a full clinical examination. This includes taking Callie’s temperature, her pulse rate and quality, heart rate, respiratory rate, mucous membrane colour and lymph nodes. This gives Laura a good indication as to how healthy Callie is prior to her anaesthetic. If any of these parameters are not within normal limits, Laura would discuss them with the owner before the procedure. Watch Callie have her health check HERE
The next stage of the process involves preparing Callie for her surgery. Join us again on 16th December to find out what goes on behind the scenes and how the nursing team get involved in caring for Callie during her neutering procedure.
