Heatstroke

June 10, 2023

Heatstroke is a serious issue for our pets.  Many owners are now aware of the dangers of leaving a pet in a car on a warm or hot day.  What many owners might not be aware off is that exercising your dog in hot weather can cause them just as much harm.

Heatstroke isn’t just a #summer issue.  After a cold #winter, dogs can take weeks to adjust to the warmer months.  If your dog has other health issues they could overheat even when it’s quite cool.  Breeds with flatter faces, such as Pugs or French Bulldogs also need extra care generally to ensure they don’t overheat.

Being aware of the warning signs of #heatstroke in your pet is vital!  Watch this short video HERE for four signs that your pet might be suffering from heat stroke.

So, what can you do if you suspect your pet is suffering from heatstroke?  You should get your pet to a vet AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.  In the meantime, HERE are three things you can do to help your pet cool down.

Walk your pet first thing in the morning or later in the evening when temperatures are cooler and stick to a gentle stroll with lots of sniffing and exploring rather than chasing balls.  It’s also a good idea to have your dog’s coat clipped.
