Rowan Vets’ guide to decluttering your pet’s things

Out with the old: toys and enrichment items

Most pets accumulate toys quickly, and over time many of them end up chewed, damaged, or simply ignored. Sorting through your pet’s toy box can help you identify what’s still safe and useful.

  • Remove any worn or broken toys, especially those with loose parts or frayed materials that may pose a choking risk.
  • Rotate or store away toys your pet has lost interest in—bringing them out again later in the year can make them feel new and exciting all over again.
  • Pass on toys in good condition that your pet no longer plays with to animal shelters or rescue organisations in Lancashire where they can bring joy to other pets.

Refresh bedding and cosy spaces

Rowan Vets’ team share that your pet’s bed, blankets, and favourite resting spots can harbour dirt, hair, and odour over time. The new year is an excellent time to:

  • Wash what you can, following the care instructions.
  • Replace older bedding where the padding has become flat, or the bed is smelly or difficult to clean.
  • Give their sleeping area a quick reset so they can start the year with a warm, fresh place to curl up.

Check your pet’s medication cupboard

Many households accumulate old or unused pet medication, especially if treatments have changed over time.

  • Check expiry dates and safely dispose of anything out of date—contact our team to ask about safe disposal.
  • Keep all current medications clearly labelled and stored out of reach of curious noses.
  • If you’re unsure whether something should be kept, feel free to give us a ring on 01772 639 800 for guidance.

Tidy accessories and seasonal gear

From leads and harnesses to coats, grooming tools, and travel accessories, these items can clutter up quickly.

  • Keep only what fits, works properly, and is comfortable for your pet.
  • Consider donating unused but good-condition items to local rescues in Lancashire—many are grateful for spare coats, blankets, or bowls.
