December 15, 2025

As pet owners, we naturally want the best for our furry friends—and the good news is that caring for them can go hand-in-hand with caring for the planet.

Simple, thoughtful choices in the food we buy and the toys and accessories we choose can benefit both our pets’ wellbeing and the environment. Our veterinary team at Rowan Vets have pulled together some practical ways dog, cat and rabbit owners can make more planet-friendly choices.

How to make planet-friendly pet choices

Sustainable choices for cat owners

Many everyday cat essentials can be swapped for more eco-friendly alternatives. Our vets in Preston, suggest that biodegradable litter made from recycled paper, wood, or corn is a great place to start as it’s better for landfill and produces less dust. Pair this with biodegradable litter tray liners and bamboo bowls instead of plastic ones.

Reduce waste by recycling food pouches where facilities exist and by re-using packaging. You can even turn household items into toys—cardboard boxes, toilet roll tubes and string make perfect playthings that can be recycled when worn out. If your cat has too many toys, consider donating the spares to a rescue centre in Lancashire.

Eco-friendly dog care

Dogs bring us joy, but they also create waste, from packaging to plastic poop bags. Choose biodegradable or compostable poop bags and look for treats and food that come in recyclable or paper packaging.

When it comes to snacks, think sustainably: use carrot sticks, cucumber or apple slices (no cores!) instead of processed treats. Try to buy loose produce, walk to the shop when you can and consider baking your own dog biscuits at home using ingredients in recyclable packaging.

Our team advise avoiding impulse-buying from the “pick-and-mix” treat stands—it’s easy to overbuy and much of the packaging ends up in landfill. Fewer, healthier treats mean a fitter dog and a lower carbon pawprint.

Greener living for rabbits

Rabbits are natural recyclers, and with a few tweaks, their care can be too. When buying fresh fruit and veg, choose loose, seasonal produce from local growers or farm shops around Lancashire. You’ll cut plastic waste and support your local community.

Rabbits love to play and forage, so make your own toys from recycled materials: cardboard boxes, hay and toilet roll tubes make excellent digging or foraging games.

Instead of buying a brand-new hutch, look for a pre-loved one online and give it a new lease of life. Upcycling an existing hutch saves money and reduces waste. And if you’re thinking of getting your rabbit a friend, consider adoption rather than buying. Many animal charities in Lancashire have rabbits looking for loving homes.

Top eco swaps

  • Dog: Switch to compostable poop bags and loose, natural treats.
  • Cat: Use biodegradable litter and recycled or bamboo accessories.
  • Rabbit: Buy locally grown, loose vegetables and make your own toys from cardboard and hay.

Our vets in Preston explain that while individual choices like reusable bags or recycled toys may seem small, they’re part of a broader shift toward more sustainable pet care. By making more thoughtful choices where we can, we can keep our animals happy and healthy while reducing our environmental footprint.
