Permethrin Poisoning in Cats
March 23, 2022
The origin of the old saying #curiositykilledthecat is not known but it’s safe to say our pet cats do like to explore and are incredibly curious about their environment. This can sometimes mean they get themselves into a #pickle without really knowing it.
One of the most common causes of poisoning in cats is PERMETHRIN poisoning. The source of this poison is most commonly from exposure to a spot-on flea treatment product intended for use in dogs. They can also be exposed to the poison by having groomed the product from a dog.
These products contain high concentrations of permethrin so even a small amount ingested or through skin contact can be very dangerous to your cat.
Signs of poisoning are:
- Drooling
- Vomiting
- Inco-ordination
- Hyperexcitability
- Tremors
- Twitching
- Convulsions
- Increased body temperature
You can find more information from INTERNATIONAL CAT CARE but if you suspect permethrin poisoning in your cat, speed is of the essence! You should bring your cat to the vet for immediate treatment.
