Becca Ferguson RVN
May 24, 2022
Today we celebrate our most recently qualified RVN, Becca, as part of Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, or #VNAM for short. Becca qualified in July 2021 and was our first successful student who followed the degree path of veterinary nurse training. Veterinary nurse training is intensive, thorough and stressful whichever route you take. Becca was also working a part time job at the same time so it takes dedication and a real passion and drive to want to study. Becca has proved that she has this passion and drive and as a result, was offered a full-time role at Rowan after she qualified.
Here’s what Becca had to say about her experience:
“I took the degree route to become an RVN, which consisted of classroom-based theory at Myerscough College and workplace practical placements over 3 years. I did 2 years of practical placements here at Rowan Vets. My practical experience had to be evidenced by completing a Nursing Progress Log (NPL). In my first year I had 2 workplace blocks and had to complete 25% of my NPL. I had to complete and pass a final exam at the end of the first year before progressing onto the second year.
In the second year I had to undertake 40 hours per week of workplace training but due to COVID 19, there were no exams or assignments. However, there was an expectation to complete 80% of my NPL.
By the third year, my classroom theory blocks had begun again alongside workplace training and by this time I had completed my NPL and the remaining assignments needed to prepare for the final exams and the practical exam, OSCE’s (Objective Structured Clinical Examination). In the degree route to training, students undertake the OSCE exam before their final written exam. In the Diploma route, the OSCE’s are undertaken at the very end of the process.
Since qualifying Rowan offered me a permanent contract as an RVN. My knowledge and confidence has grown with their support, particularly with anaesthetics. I am now a part of the on-call and weekend rota and have gained more experience with emergencies, particularly caesarean sections. I have an interest in nursing medical in-patients and exotic species.”
